World Press Photo 2012

Samuel Aranda from Spain has received the main prize in this year’s edition of World Press Photo. The awarded photography presents a Jemen woman holding a relative in her arms. It was taken in a mosque that served as a hospital for those demonstrating against the system.

World Press Photo is the most prominent contest for press photographers worldwide. The WPP Foundation has been active since 1955. The contest is held on an annual basis and its outcomes are announced in February. Photos are considered within the following categories:  Photo of the Year, General News, People in the News, Sports Action, Sports Features, Contemporary Issues, Daily Life, Portraits, Arts and Entertainment, Nature. Both singe photos and reportages are featured. For more than 50 years, World Press Photo has been a photographic database of pivotal events in the world. Not only are the contest photos evidence of what happened in the last half a century, but they also constitute an expression of unique artistic sense, talent and bravery on part of those photographers who managed to take snapshots of the most important and poignant historical events.

 This year’s edition of WPP has seen two Poles celebrating. Tomasz Lazar joined multi-awarded Tomasz Gudzowaty. He received the sceond prize in ‘People in the News’ for photographies showing the Occupy Wall Street demonstration.
